Sea ice and permafrost are important parts of the arctic environment. Sea ice is frozen seawater and Permafrost is substrate that has been frozen for a minimum of 2 years that has two types: discontinuous and continuous. Discontinuous are in areas that are slightly below freezing and continuous is where the soil temperature is below -5 degrees.

It discusses how permafrost contains large amounts of carbon and that could be harmful to ourselves or our children. The carbon could be released when the permafrost thaws; nowadays, there has been arctic warming, so this has become more likely. The permafrost carbon has been stored because it’s frozen. In order to understand this carbon balance, you need to understand what happens with the permafrost microbes when it gets warmer.

I [James Kramer] work with high-speed captures of fluids colliding with themselves and other objects. This is a shot of a drop of heavy cream colliding with another drop of heavy cream & blue food coloring that is sitting on a piece of black glass. The image was rotated 90 degrees clockwise because it looks like a blue butterfly in that orientation. Capture speed was approximately 1/11,000th of a second.

Scientist say the amount of light radiation that humans encountered can be adapted however their is so much that the human eye can take. Besides defective seeing, light pollution causes dizziness, poor appetite and eye irritation.

Chinese Alligator
This small, freshwater crocodilian species now numbers fewer than 200 in the wild, mostly restricted to a small reserve in the Anhui province of China, along the lower Yangtze River. Habitat destruction, particularly dam building, has devastated the alligator population, but hunting has also taken a toll. Alligator meat is promoted as a way to cure the common cold and to prevent cancer, and alligator organs are also said to have medicinal properties. Captive breeding, in an effort to restore the species, has proved successful, and there are now thousands of captive animals and new efforts to reintroduce them into the wild.

Conservation medicine refers to the overlap between human health, animal health, and environmental conditions. The swine flu scare in 2009 was classified by the World Health Organization as a pandemic; 17,000 people died worldwide from the strain. The vaccine developed to fight H1N1 may be linked to narcolepsy, a recent Finnish study says. The number of narcolepsy occurrences in children injected with the vaccine was seventeen times higher than children that did not receive the vaccine.

ATTENTION IMPORTANT NOTICE

OKAY GUYS!!!! Hey, I know this is EXTREMELY last minute but it would be nice if we all had a party. Its not only the the end of Conservation Biology but all the school year CLASSES!!! So we worked hard so lets enjoy some food!!!! Bring some chips, cookie, cups, soda SOMETHING!!!

- AND I plan to get about two pizza’s for everyone… SO can everyone pitch in like $2.00 to help with the cost. I will buy the pizza’s and you guys can give me the money tomorrow.
